When the dog wakes me up at 5:30 a.m. to take her on her preamble to the daily constitutional, the sun is just rising.
Two months ago the sun had been up for at least 30 minutes and you know what that means; the summer -- and best season for riding -- is getting long in the tooth and there ain't as much left as the heat and humidity would have us believe.
So the next few days are a great time to get out and ride and meet a few fellow single-track vehicle renegades.
The social season starts off tonight at Wild Wings Cafe for the Original Bike Night. OK, there's some debate about that, but that's politics and this SOB hates that crap, so screw it. The night is there, J.T. will likely be there and perhaps part of the Jarman Family so why not check it out. They're good people, so chat 'em.
Tomorrow is Bike Night at Buffalo Wild Wings in the Barracks Road Shopping Center, a most fun evening that often attracts a load of folks. Now that a Thursday bike night cranks in Waynesboro, some of the Over-The-Mountain people are skipping this one, but if you're this side or that side of Afton, it's a good time.
Check with Jarmans Sportcycles to see if there are any pre-bike night rides. The Jarmans often sponsor a Black Jack Run that has prizes and raises money for a variety of good causes, most causes that you don't hear of in the focused and responsible media.
If you're looking for some out-of-the area runs, check a few Internet sites that focus on statewide and far away regional events.
This weekend, Shenandoah Harley-Davidson/Buell in Staunton is holding its annual Ms. SH-D contest featuring "cold beverages, demo rides, vendors, food" and "gorgeous ladies" who "compete for cash prizes."
Excellent.
There, of course, will be a band. Six or seven, actually, including Occum's Razor. Doors open at 9 a.m., vendors vend at 11 a.m. and the competitions crank at 1 p.m., give or take.
Lest we forget next week -- and knowing we, we will -- next Saturday is Big Daddy's BBQ day at Waugh Harley-Davidson in Orange, with free 'q from 11 a.m. until it's eaten and music by Sweetwater. Pin striping, patch sewing and other activities available on site.
Any SOB out there with plans for the weekend, or who knows of poker runs that we may not, feel free to drop a line at jeffersoniansobs@gmail.com and we'll put it on the list.
See you on the road.
Ride well.
