The American Motorcyclist Association, the real AMA, has recognized Jeffersonia's own U.S. 33 from Harrisonburg to Seneca Rocks, W.Va as one of the top 15 roads to ride in the nation.OK, so somehow Route 211 from Luray, the road with the tightest curves and thickest police presence this side of the Dragon's Tail was overlooked, but at least the AMA recognized one Virginia road.
The list was created by members of the AMA who voted on their favorite roads. The top 15 selections represent some of the best scenic highways and byways in the land.
Hitting top of the pops was the Beartooth Highway in Montana and Wyoming. Can't say, never been on it.
Second was the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina, to which I would add Virginia's Blue Ridge Parkway as well. Been on both, both are beautiful and they make a fantastic ride.
US 129 -- The Tail of the Dragon -- on the North Carolina-Tennessee border finished third among the AMA and probably second on the law enforcement section. I haven't been on it, yet, but I will.
Fourth was the magnificent, US 550, from Ouray to Durango, Colo., a stunning ride and fifth was California Route 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, a road so gorgeous Honda named an ugly bike after it.
Other roads are...
6. Going to the Sun Road, Glacier National Park, Montana.
7. Cherohala Skyway, North Carolina and Tennessee.
8. California Route 36.
9. US 12, Lolo Pass, Idaho and Montana.
10. Angeles Crest Highway, California Route 2.
11. Natchez Trace, from Natchez, Miss., to Nashville, Tenn.
13. California Route 58, McKittrick to Santa Margarita.
14. Ohio Route 170, Calcutta to Poland.
15. Washington Route 129 and Oregon Route 3, Clarkston, Wash., to Enterprise, Ore.
