Dan Neumeister, a long-time motorcyclist and a winemaker at North Garden's Sugarleaf Winery, is the local rider killed in yesterday's crash on Earlysville Road by what Albemarle County police say may have been a drunk driver.
Mr. Neumeister, 31, of Crozet, rode a Suzuki TL-R 1000, tuned by Bee. He was struck and killed around 2 p.m. yesterday by a car driven by William T. Thompson, 58, of Ruckersville after Mr. Thompson lost control and swerved into Mr. Neumeister's lane, police say. The car then rolled over several times.
The crash occurred on Earlysville Road near Norwood Road.
Police have charged Mr. Thompson with DUI, according to The Daily Progress. They said "alcohol and speed" were likely causes of the crash.
Mr. Neumeister died shortly after being struck and his bike destroyed. Mr. Thompson was flown to UVa Medical Center and is in "guarded condition" after his car was trashed in the crash.
Mr. Neumeister was an accomplished rider and winemaker. Sugarleaf wines were served this year at The White House. He also served as an assistant winemaker at White Hall Vineyards.
