The funeral will be held at Teague Funeral Home on Ivy Road 2-4 p.m. Wednesday.

Neighbors placed flowers on the guardrail struck by Street Thundercat MC president Corey Guthrie and friends placed a poem to honor the likable guy who helped organize the club and its activities.

Mr. Guthrie died early Friday morning when his motorcycle left U.S. 250 bypass, bounced over a  grassy median, crossed the entrance ramp to the highway from Locust Avenue and struck a guardrail.

From Stephanie B, in honor of Corey "Megatron" Guthrie

The impact bent the guardrail to a 90 degree angle and sent the bike down several hundred feet down a sidestreet. Mr. Guthrie came to rest on the curb cut  at the intersection of Watson Avenue and St. Charles Avenue. He died of his injuries, Charlottesville police motorcycle officers, who investigated the crash, say.

The wreck happened around 1 a.m.

"We didn't hear anything," said a neighbor, who rides a 1200 Sportster. "We had the windows closed and the air conditioning and we never heard a thing. We woke up and there were people in our yard.  It was the police still investigating at 5 a.m."

The neighbor said a sprig of flowers attached to the guardrail next to the poem was placed by her husband, another SOB.

"We ride and he rides a lot and it's just so sad to see this happen," the neighbor said. "We feel so bad for the family and his club."

Mr. Guthrie helped create the Charlottesville chapter of the Street Thundercats MC and also helped get the club associated with the regional Confederation of Clubs.

Not affiliated with any larger clubs, STC nonetheless earned respect from other riding clubs and MCs, including soutwest Virginia's Pagans MC and Sinister Souls, whose charity fundraising events STC MC often attended and supported.

Mr. Guthrie also helped organize a successful fundraiser for the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Wednesday's Bike Night at Wild Wings Cafe. He also supported a Thursday bike night at Buffalo Wild Wings.

He is the second STC member to die in a crash. Aaron "Dub" Boyd, a prospect with the club, died in June when he was tossed off the highside of his bike while merging from northbound U.S. 29 onto eastbound I-64. The club was planning an Aug. 28 memorial ride for Mr. Boyd with proceeds to go this wife and child.

No funeral plans have been released for Mr. Guthrie and STC members have not released any memorial plans as of yet.

  • Dear Stephanie,

I'm sorry to have put the details out so early. Corey was a wonderful guy and I never saw him mistreat anyone. He did much for motorcycling in the community and will be missed by so many.

My apologies to you and my sympathies to you, his family, his brothers and friends.
