A slight change is being made in the name of Central Virginia's Internet-based riding group.
The Charlottesville Motorcycle Riders is the new moniker for the local meetup group, a change that organizers hope will make its purpose clear: Riding.
"I believe the word "MEETUP" gives the impression that we do formally meet at some location," said Carl Moje, in an e-mail to the group. "The name of our group on the meetup website is now "CHARLOTTESVILLE MOTORCYCLE RIDERS"...... (plain and simple)."
Mr. Moje noted that, with the Internet, concerns and ideas can be instantly transmitted to all members, making a meetup, except to ride, unnecessary.
The loose-knit organization is not patch-based, but open to anyone with a hankering to ride.
"It is important to recognize that we are not an organization or group that is run like a club,: Mr. Moje said. " Meaning, we do not have formal meetings with an agenda, dues, nor formulate events or fund raisers. There are enough of these events occurring in and around Charlottesville whereby we do not need to create our own. "
The group, which features a variety of riders and rides and bikes, meets Sunday afternoons at Martin's Grill off of U.S. 29 in Forest Lakes. Members are encouraged to go to the Web site and RSVP so that other riders know if, and how many others are showing up.
"There may be others that will go on the ride if they see a 'YES' posted on the event," Mr. Moje said. "It is very frustrating to show up and no one else shows up when there are 'YES' RSVP's on the website calendar."
Mr. Moje is also looking for more experienced riders -- those over 50 -- to see if they'd be interested in forming another riding group. The group would be separate from the CMR list.
