According to Clutch and Chrome, the Illinois woman who killed a motorcyclist stopped at a light because she was painting her nails while driving, has been convicted of felony reckless homicide.
The fatal crash occurred last May when the woman, Lora Hunt, 49, was busily taking care of her appearance while cruising 50 miles per hour down the road. She slammed into the bike without ever touching the brakes, according to the black box in her Chevrolet Impala.
The impact killed the rider Anita Zaffke, 56.
The American Motorcyclist Association has lobbied for laws that will toughen penalties for distracted driving, whether it's texting, talking or buffing one's cuticles. Her son has also sought stricter penalties.
"On behalf of the AMA and its members, I want to express our sincere condolences to Ms. Zaffke's family," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "This episode puts into stark relief the tragedy that can result from distracted driving, and we hope that our efforts and those [Zaffke's 32-year-old son, Greg] will help avoid further tragedies."
